Reiki

What is Reiki?

Reiki, a Japanese word  (pronounced ray-kee), means Universal Life Force Energy or God Energy. This energy is everywhere present. The Reiki method of natural healing is practiced throughout the world. It is a non-invasive technique of “laying on hands” on the body or above the body. The practitioner, in essence, channels the energy to the person, animal or place where it can release imbalances or negative blocks, the cause of distress or disease. Thus, with Reiki we can help ourselves and others. What makes Reiki different from other hands on modalities is the attunement process, where the Reiki energy is passed from teacher to student. Reiki is defined by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) as an energy medicine therapy and part of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). Reiki is not affiliated with any one religion or religious practice.  Reiki is simple and easy to learn. In studying Reiki, you can build a wonderful foundation in which to explore other energy medicine practices.

Benefits of Reiki

Reiki is an effective technique that promotes balance, relaxation, stress reduction and overall well-being. It releases stress and tension by creating deep relaxation.

Reiki is especially helpful in the care that follows medical treatments or surgical procedures.

The practice of Reiki re-opens the healing channel with us, awakening our natural healing abilities.

It is a complementary adjunct to other modalities such as aromatherapy, reflexology, massage, etc.

Reiki can be used in first-aid situations.

Reiki extends its healing properties into all past, present, and future experiences that need soothing.

Reiki addresses not only physical dis-eases, it also treats emotional and mental conditions.

The practice of Reiki increases our spiritual awareness and can be transformative.

Reiki History

Reiki as a system of healing was re-discovered by Master Usui, a Japanese monk, in the late 1800s. Usui created the word “Reiki” in an attempt to label the healing energy system, the connecting link, or anchor, of energy from “All That Is” (or the Tao) to the physical realm of humanity.  In fact, the spiritual aspects and meditation were emphasized by Usui to his students in Japan, whereas, the Western approach has integrated the chakra system into its teachings.  Much like other systems, there are now many varieties of Reiki. You may see Reiki-infused items such as candles, soap, etc. listed for sale. “Reiki Today Dallas” follows the Usui teachings called Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki (Usui System of Natural Healing).

Reiki Precepts

Here are the precepts or principles of Reiki as handed down by Mrs. Hawayo Takata, who introduced Reiki to the West. You may see slight variations in translation, but this is the most common. Usui advised his students to repeat the precepts every morning evening and considered them part of the practice. I recommend to my students that they take a version that resonates with them and learn that one.

Just for today, do not worry.

Just for today, do not anger.

Honor your parents, teachers, and elders.

Earn your living honestly.

Show gratitude to every living thing.
